Obsidian Buddy Read Chapters 5-11

Hi everyone! I have my second post from my buddy read with Olivia from Brewing Up Books. Olivia is going to be elaborating on the book much more than I am because this is her first time reading it. To view my first post click here. Also, I did not mention in the last post, but these will NOT be spoiler free discussions.

Goodreads Synopsis:

Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I’d pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring… until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something… unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon’s touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I’m getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don’t kill him first, that is.Starting over sucks.

My thoughts:

In these chapters, we start to see the relationships develop among the characters. We see Dee and Katy grow closer as friends and we see an inkling of an underlying sweetness in Daemon that was not present before. We also get a heightened sense of unease from Katy. She begins to grow suspicious about what is happening around her. When we leave off with chapter eleven, Katy begins to add two and two together to realize that something is not normal around her. One of the defining moments between chapters one and eleven is when Katy is attacked in the library parking lot. I’d say the three most important reasons for this are A. to increase the sense of abnormality within Katy’s environment B. to show us the defensive, yet caring side of Daemon C. It causes readers to view Katy as somewhat naive and very innocent (which comes to be important throughout the rest of the series, if you don’t mind my jumping ahead a bit.

Quote I liked:

“‘I’ve always found that the most beautiful people, truly beautiful inside and out, are the ones who are quiet;y unaware of their effect.’ His eyes searched mine intently, and for a moment we stood toe to toe. ‘The ones who throw their beauty around waste what they have? Their beauty is only passing. It’s just a shell hiding nothing bu shadows and emptiness'”(Armentrout 54).
