Before I get into the post, I want to apologize for not writing my holiday series this week! I’ve been swamped with finals!
So a long time ago, my buddy Olivia had her friend who did not care for reading (I know, I didn’t realize those people existed either) to review books purely on the cover and synopsis. You can find her first post of this here. I decided (with permission from Olivia of course) to do it too! So I will list the book cover and synopsis below then hand the computer to my friend Will!
One kiss could be the last.
Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she’s anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.
Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she’s crushed on since forever.
Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she’s not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn’t an issue, considering Roth has no soul.
But when Layla discovers she’s the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne… it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.
Kathy tells me this is one of her favorite books, so you know it’ll be a wholesome read. However, it was a little bit of a challenge to get through reading the first few sentences of the synopsis without laughing. I’m not sure how I feel about Layla’s ability to literally suck the soul out of any living thing with a kiss. Also, what’s up with Roth’s name? Is Layla trying to cash in her 401k? Do demon-gargoyle hybrids need 401k’s?
But back to Layla’s choice…
How come a half-demon, half-gargoyle girl has to choose between two hot guys who love her and I can barely get someone to look in my direction? She’s able to kill someone by kissing them and she has not one, but two sexy monster boys to choose between. How dare you Layla…
Also, how can someone not know they’re the reason for the end of the world? That’s like being a jerk to your friends and then wondering why no one wants to hang out with you. You’d think that Layla, being a demon/gargoyle, would know that being normal is not something that happens to neither demons, nor gargoyles.
The story starts off with Layla sitting in her perfect gargoyle room thinking about dreamboat Zayne and how unfortunate it is she’s unable to kiss him with her perfect face. Layla is ripped from her personal soap opera by the sound of her Warden parents calling her downstairs for dinner. She floats down the steps and is greeted not by her parents, but by an unusually hot demon, standing over her parents’ dead bodies. “OH MY SATAN!” she screams, “WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!” “I’m Roth…” he utters smoothly. “Oh…” Layla says, looking up and down Roth’s hot demon bod, ignoring the corpses of her recently deceased parents. “I know all your secrets” Roth says seductively. “That’s hot,” Layla thinks to herself, “I wonder if he has a soul…” “I don’t,” Roth responds, shocking Layla “that means you can kiss me.” “Okay!” Layla says mindlessly, locking lips with Roth in that instant.
Suddenly, the ground erupts, spilling out demons like pus from a month-old cyst growing behind an ear. “What’s going on?” Layla asks, shocked at this sudden turn of events. “Come on Layla, I’m a demon, but you’re half gargoyle. It never would’ve worked, especially with how much your family hates demons.” “But you’re the only thing I’ve been able to kiss without taking its soul!” Layla exclaims, begging the smokin hot demon that had just appeared in her life to not leave her. But of course, before she could say this, Roth had disappeared.
“NOOOO!!” Layla cries out, but Roth’s sexy silhouette is already swooping over the horizon, and further and further from her grasp. Then, Zayne appears in Layla’s dining room, “WHAT THE HEAVEN HAPPENED HERE?!” “Oh Zayne, it was horrible! This demon, Roth, came in here and killed my parents!” Layla cried. “I can’t believe this.” Zayne added on.
“OR CAN YOU?!” a voice came from the kitchen. It was Roth! Returning to the scene of the crime, to rescue his newly orphaned girlfriend. “You dirty demon!” Zayne yelled. “You grimy gargoyle!” Roth fired back. Then Roth and Zayne get into a brawl over who loves Layla more. “Please stop!” Layla cries out “Don’t fight over me!” However, the two sexy monsters continue fighting, much to Layla’s chagrin.
This fight then continues for all eternity and Layla patiently waits for one of the boys to emerge victorious. Sadly, this doesn’t happen. On the bright side, Layla can’t take any more souls through kisses.
Rating for the real summary:
2 kisses, because the original summary left more demon-gargoyle drama to be desired
Rating for my summary:
I don’t mean to be boastful, but I feel like my summary fully delivered 0n the teen demon-gargoyle drama that the real summary promised
That’s all folks, have a great weekend,
